This is a brief explanation of the word ‘Obsolete’.
For detailed documents that will guide you through the process of Obsolescence Management, please see the index page:
A dictionary will tell you that the word ‘obsolete’ means ‘no longer produced or used; out of date’.
But it is more than that.
The word has been in use for 500 years to describe something that is no longer practiced or used, out of date, gone out of use, of a discarded type.
It originates from Latin “obsoletus”, “fall into disuse, be forgotten about, become tarnished,”
It does not need to be a physical item, but also a word, an idea.
Please see ‘Obsolescence’, ‘Tangible’ and ‘Intangible’.
