The MTBF is the estimated time between failures of an equipment.
The calculated time between repaired failures of a product is determined by many factors, including:
Temperature of the individual components within the equipment.
The stresses imposed on each component.
The environment in which the components are used, (temperature, humidity, physical stresses (vibration, shock, etc), and others.
Many standards are used, including MIL-HDBK-217, etc.
These standards can only give a guide to MTBF and cannot be relied upon to give a definitive expectation.
Associated, is MTTF (Mean Time To Failure), the estimated time to failure of a non-repairable (ie, a component) Item.
