Keep It Simple, Stupid…

How often have you designed a relatively simple piece of equipment, and then on reflection you realise that you have started to design the Space Shuttle, (Myself Included)?

Design Engineers often get carried away. ‘I’ll just add this’, ‘wouldn’t that be a great idea?’, etc. etc.

Before you know it, you have created a monster far in excess of what is actually needed.

If you are working as part of a team, others will probably see the over-design and return you to the original design requirements.

When working alone is more difficult to appreciate the unnecessary complexity being added to the design.

Personally I like to leave to project for a few days/weeks, return with fresh eyes, re-read the original specification and compare that with what has been produced.

None of the extra work done is wasted, there are always other projects.
