These are items that provide a limited parametric match to the original, but are deemed acceptable by the design authority as acceptable alternatives to the obsolete item in a design.
They may require a minor redesign to the design for they to be accepted, and may require extensive testing/re qualification prior to their use.
Alternative Items are sometimes referred to as Complex Substitutes.
